Storm damage repair, from claim to finished roof

If a nor’easter, windstorm, or fallen tree just damaged your roof, the right order of operations is: stop the water now with an emergency tarp, document the damage before anything gets covered or cleaned up, then file the insurance claim with a licensed local contractor at your side to meet the adjuster. At the Jersey Shore most sudden, weather-caused roof damage is covered by your homeowners policy minus the deductible — but only if it’s documented as storm damage, not written off as old-roof wear. Paragon Exteriors handles all of it, and we never ask you to sign your claim away to do it.

First 48 hours: stop the damage, save the evidence

Water moving through a roof doesn’t wait for a claim number. The moment interior leaking starts, drywall, insulation, and framing are on the clock. Our storm response is built around that reality:

Drones matter more than people expect. An adjuster standing in your driveway can’t see the back slope or the ridge; our aerial imagery puts the damage on the record from angles a ground inspection misses — and that’s often the difference between an approved claim and a lowball.

Never sign an AOB with a storm-chaser

After every big Shore storm, out-of-town crews flood the neighborhoods knocking on doors, pushing an Assignment of Benefits (AOB) form. Signing it hands your insurance claim and your roof to a company you’ll never find again.

You do not need to assign your benefits to anyone to get a roof repaired. Anyone insisting otherwise is protecting their payday, not your home.

Built for Jersey Shore storms

Ocean and Monmouth County roofs live in the path of coastal weather that inland roofs never face — nor’easters that stall offshore and pound the coast for days, sustained wind off the bay and ocean, and horizontal rain that exploits every weak seam. Barrier-island, bayfront, and back-bay homes take the hardest hits, and damage is often invisible from the ground: a strip of shingles lifted on the ocean-facing slope, flashing peeled at a chimney, a ridge cap gone. After any major blow, it’s worth a free inspection even if the ceiling isn’t leaking yet — because by the time it is, the deck below is already soaked. See our guide to protecting your roof from nor’easters and how NJ wind and storm insurance claims work.

When repair becomes replacement

Sometimes a storm is the final straw on a roof that was already near the end. If the damage is widespread, or your roof is 20+ years old and losing the fight, a full roof replacement is often the smarter claim — and your policy may owe most of it. When the damage is isolated, a targeted roof repair puts you back to weather-tight for far less. We tell you honestly which one your roof needs, and we do both.

Get your roof inspected free

Storm damage gets worse every day it sits open. Request a free inspection — we’ll document everything, tell you straight whether you have a claim worth filing, and stand beside you through the adjuster visit. If your out-of-pocket runs past the deductible, financing turns the balance into a manageable monthly payment. One call, one local crew, from the first tarp to the last shingle: 848-633-6440.

Storm Damage Repair questions, answered

Will my homeowners insurance pay for storm roof damage in NJ?

Usually yes when the damage is sudden and weather-caused — wind, a nor’easter, hail, or a tree strike. Standard NJ homeowners policies cover repair or replacement minus your deductible (commonly $1,000–$2,500). What insurers deny is wear-and-tear and old, un-maintained roofs, so documentation matters. We photograph and drone-map the damage the day we visit so your claim is built on evidence, not a guess.

What does storm damage roof repair cost out of pocket?

If the claim is approved, your out-of-pocket is typically just the deductible — often $1,000–$2,500 depending on your policy. Emergency tarping to stop active water intrusion runs a few hundred dollars and is itself usually reimbursable as loss mitigation. Financing covers the gap if the scope exceeds what insurance pays. You get an itemized number before any work begins.

How fast can you tarp my roof after a storm?

Fast — an actively leaking roof is an emergency and we treat it that way. A tarp stops interior water damage from spreading to drywall, insulation, and framing while the claim is processed. We photograph the damage before we cover it so the tarp never hides evidence the adjuster needs to see.

Why does the Jersey Shore get so much wind and nor’easter roof damage?

Ocean and Monmouth County roofs take the full brunt of coastal storms — nor’easters that stall offshore for two or three days, 50–70 mph sustained gusts off the bay and ocean, and wind-driven rain that finds every lifted shingle and tired flashing. Barrier-island and bayfront homes see it worst. That exposure is exactly why damaged roofs here need re-inspecting after every major blow.

Should I sign an AOB with a storm-chaser who knocks on my door?

No. An Assignment of Benefits hands your insurance claim — and control of your roof — to a company you met once after a storm. Many are out-of-state crews chasing weather; they inflate scope, do the minimum, and are gone before the first callback. You never need to sign your claim away to get a roof fixed. Keep your policy in your name and hire a licensed local contractor you can find again.
